Canned pumpkin, with no added sugar or spices, is loaded with vitamins C, K and E, beta-carotene, fiber, and several other beneficial antioxidants. The nutrients found in pumpkin help to keep a dog or cat’s immune system strong, thereby strengthening resistance to illnesses.
Because pumpkin is an excellent source of fiber, it can help dogs and cats having issues with diarrhea or constipation. 1 tablespoon, (depending on the pet’s weight) can make the difference between a case of chronic diarrhea or constipation and a normal daily bowel movement. Many veterinarians often prescribe pumpkin as part of the treatment for either intestinal problems, as well as simply a healthful dietary supplement.Of course, as with any symptom, if it persists for several days without resolving, it’s best to consult with your veterinarian.
There are some great pumpkin products available for pets like Honest Kitchen’s “Pure Form”—a pumpkin-based powder mixture added to pet food, which also includes natural digestive aids like papaya, fennel and slippery elm. “Nummy Tum-Tum” (gotta love that name!) is an organic pumpkin puree for dogs and cats.
But remember pumpkin is best in small doses!
