Dealing With Doggie Teeth And Furniture: Save The Fine Wooden Cabinet
With behavioral problems being the most common reason that owners rehome their pet, accounting for 47% of rehomed dogs, the importance of identifying and correcting pet problems promptly cannot be overemphasized.
Owning a dog should not mean living in a shabby-looking home with every piece of furniture leg chewed to pieces. No dog owner wants to come home to find the furniture they’ve worked hard to afford, which has been mangled and ruined by their furry friend.
There are ways to overcome this and restore tranquility to your life, although a certain amount of chewing in a teething puppy is normal.
Many dogs, with working owners, experience separation anxiety which can manifest itself in the form of chewing. Ways to overcome this range from leaving the radio on for the dog when you’re out, to arranging for pet care services, e.g. a dog walker or house visitor, to help break up the day for your dog.
A full working day can just be too long on their own for some dogs. Why would man’s best friend do this?
If your dog is past the teething stage then there are a number of other factors that might be causing it to chew on furniture.
One situation may be an overweight dog on a restricted diet resulting in hunger which can sometimes lead to chewing.
Other possible causes of furniture chewing include a lack of exercise or mental stimulation, stress or frustration and normal chewing behavior which is present in some dogs post puppy stage.
Always ensure your dog gets enough exercise and this will vary greatly between breeds, so be sure to do your homework on your dog’s breed.
To prevent your dog from chewing the furniture try spraying wooden table legs etc with chew deterrent spray and also provide suitable, good quality and durable chewing toys.
Harmony at home
Once your dog is in a routine and has accepted some blocks of time alone at home, you should find the furniture is ignored. Always ensure all your dog’s needs are met fully, from exercise to mental stimulation.
Taking them out, meeting other dogs, and having new experiences are all part of the process of becoming a well rounded, happy furry friend without problems. Always be mindful of leaving dogs alone for too many hours and provide chew toys to alleviate any chewing urges.
By providing this good general dog care going forward, it is possible to have a beautiful home alongside a happy dog owner.
