Training the Kids

It's Training Tip Tuesday!

Today's tip is addressed to the parents of actual human children.

As the weather grows warmer, both kids and dogs will be spending more time outside. Therefore, it is critical that parents educate their kids on dog safety.

A child should never approach a dog they do not know nor should they pet a dog without asking the "dog parent" first.

If a child is approached by a dog they do not know, the child should "become a tree" by holding very still, folding their hands in front of them and looking at the ground.

Instruct them to not run away, even though that may be their first instinct. Your child should know that if they are attacked by a dog, they should drop to the ground, lie on their stomach, cover the back of their neck with their hands and cover their ears with their forearms. This position will protect vital areas until help arrives.

Kids and dogs are a great combination. They belong together. But both need to be "trained" in order for all to be safe.
